Banner & Poster Resolution Calculator

Convert banner size and DPI into pixel canvas dimensions and megapixels.

DPI
Large banners are viewed from farther away, so required DPI drops. Enter final width/height and viewing assumptions to see a sensible pixel target.

How it works

Pixels = inches × DPI for each side.
Megapixels = (W×H pixels) ÷ 1,000,000.

Worked example

48 × 24 in at 100 DPI → 4800 × 2400 px (11.5 MP).

DPI by viewing distance

Use Typical DPI
Hand-held poster 150–300
Trade-show banner 72–150
Billboard / far 30–72

Frequently asked questions

Should I always use 300 DPI for banners?

Usually no — file size explodes. Match DPI to viewing distance and printer RIP advice.

Why is banner DPI lower than shirt DPI?

Viewing distance. A roadside banner does not need shirt-level detail.

What if the client zooms a photo of the banner?

Close-up photos can look soft even when the install looks fine at distance — set expectations.

Should I still use bleed?

Yes — finishing and pocket hems still need margin beyond the live area.
