Shipping Costs for Print Shops (Why DIM Weight Matters)
Light shirts in big boxes get charged as heavy packages. Measure volumetric weight first.
Print shops often lose money on “free shipping” because carriers bill dimensional (volumetric) weight, not only the scale weight of folded tees. A light parcel in a big box can price out like a heavy one.
What volumetric weight means
Carriers compute a dimensional weight from length × width × height ÷ a divisor, then charge the greater of that number and the actual pounds on the scale. Your negotiated account may use a different divisor than the public website — always confirm.
Shop workflow
- Pack the order the way you really ship (not an optimistic tiny box).
- Measure outside dimensions in inches.
- Weigh the sealed package.
- Run the Shipping Volumetric Weight Calculator.
- Price postage from billable weight, then fold that cost into Etsy Fee & Profit or POD Profit.
Packing levers that protect margin
- Flatten apparel folds to cut height.
- Right-size boxes — empty space is expensive.
- Avoid rigid overboxing when a mailer is safe for the product.
- Track average billable weight per SKU for a month and bake it into product price.
Free shipping reality check
If marketing wants free shipping, the product price must carry expected billable-weight cost plus payment fees. Otherwise you are buying customers with postage.

FAQ
Which divisor should I use?
Start with your carrier’s published divisor (often 139 domestically). Your account may differ.
Does this include fuel surcharges?
No — those sit on top of the rate card. Volumetric weight only sets the billable weight input.
What about international?
Divisors and dimensional rules vary. Re-check for each service level.
Should I show shipping as a line item?
For B2B wholesale, usually yes. For D2C “free shipping,” hide it in product price but still calculate it.
