DTF & Shop Cost

How to Price DTF Prints (Cost + Markup Method)

Build a repeatable DTF quote: film area, ink, powder, waste, labour, then markup — without guessing.

Profitable DTF pricing starts with unit production cost, not competitor envy. If you do not know cost per square foot of film and average ink/powder per print, every “$8 transfer” promo is a gamble.

Step 1 — Measure the design area

Use width × height in inches. Convert to square feet (÷ 144). That drives film cost more than anything else on short runs.

Step 2 — Add variable costs

Run numbers in the DTF Cost Calculator.

Step 3 — Apply markup, not magic

Many shops use 2×–3× on transfer-only jobs. Short custom runs often need 2.5×–4× plus a setup fee because art time does not scale with quantity.

Turn unit cost into a customer quote with the Print Pricing Calculator.

Step 4 — Quote setup separately

Gang sheet layout, background removal, and color tweaks are real work. A flat setup fee protects you on orders under 12–24 pieces.

FAQ

Should I match the cheapest shop in my city?

Only if your costs match theirs. Underpricing with higher waste or slower equipment destroys margin.

Do I include blank shirts in transfer pricing?

Quote transfers and finished garments separately unless you bundle intentionally with known garment cost.

Is this guide a substitute for manufacturer specs?

No. Use it for workflow and quoting structure, then follow your film, ink, blank and press brand charts.
